What are Movement Disorders?
Movement disorders are a group of neurological conditions characterized by abnormal, involuntary movements or impaired voluntary movements. These disorders can affect the speed, smoothness, or accuracy of motor activity, leading to difficulties with coordination, posture, and overall movement. Symptoms of movement disorders can include tremors, muscle stiffness, rigidity, difficulty initiating or stopping movements, or uncoordinated movements. These symptoms can vary in severity and may significantly impact a person’s ability to perform daily activities.
The underlying causes of movement disorders are diverse and can include genetic factors, brain injuries, infections, neurodegenerative diseases, or side effects of certain medications. Some disorders may result from damage to specific regions of the brain, such as the basal ganglia, which is responsible for coordinating voluntary movements. Other movement disorders are linked to imbalances in neurotransmitters like dopamine.
